Everyone has his/her musical era. Now don't get me wrong, I have an eclectic musical repertoire. I love it all. But nothing can comfort me faster than late 60s and 70s music. It drives Chris insane, and I can't listen to it when he is around, unless it's on my iPod.
I remember when I was bar tending at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Birmingham, AL,a guy at the bar gave me some money to go to the juke box and play whatever I wanted to play. After he spent some time nursing his drink and listening to the music I had chosen, he asked me why I listened to my daddy's music. Well, my daddy was only 19 years old when I was born, and I was raised with this music, so it is my music too.
Give me Neil Diamond, Chicago, Bread, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell, Jesus Christ Superstar, Simon and Garfunkel, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Elton John. I can't even tell you how many times I have won mid day music trivia at the local radio station due to my love of late 60s and 70s style music. Here are a few of my winning answers.
DJ: Who are the men named in Paul Simon's 50 ways to leave your lover?
AZ: (slip out the back)Jack, (make a new plan)Stan, (you don't need to be coy)Roy, (hop on the bus)Gus,(just drop off the key)Lee
DJ: Name the song and the artist: "She was a lady and I was a dreamer"
AZ: Neil Diamond, Longfellow Serenade
DJ: Complete this phrase: There ain't no good guy, there ain't no bad guy...
AZ: There's only you and me and we just disagree.
DJ: Who was "the one she's waited for" in the Bread hit "Diary"?
AZ: Someone else, not me. Wouldn't you know it? She didn't show it.

OMG.
Well, we're differently fashioned I suppose. I was looking at one of my favorite blogs yesterday, and I happened to notice one of the tags was "Sie küssen mein Nippen so Heiß" and I fell out laughing because it was a play on words from a quasi-famous aria, but instead of reading "You kiss my lips so hotly", it now read in Pig-German "You kiss my *nipples" so hotly"
There is no point in this except to show off MY esoteric knowlege. It's apparently in our genes.
I love quite a few artists from that era, too, and it's because of my parents. Love Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, Carly Simon, Carole King, John Denver, James Taylor, early Heart, Linda Rondstat...
I love them all! A good bit of the music I love was never on the charts during my lifetime. Almost all of the karaoke I sing was from that era: Neil Diamond, The Mamas and the Papas, The Eagles, James Taylor. They are great on a road trip too!
Did anyone mention Jim Croce?
Oh, Elton's "Crocadile Rock" is a big song from my childhood memories.
hahaa
good show on the winning answers!
I have never called in like that, I always just yell the answer out at the car radio
When I was little I'd play my Dad's 8 track tapes over and over again.
One of my favorite numbers was "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", with Neil Diamond and Barbara Streisand.
Later I would discover Neil Diamond's musical adaptation to "Johnathan Livingston Seagull"--good stuff.
Of course, there was Donna and Barbara terrorizing the male dominated world with "Enough is Enough". I was right there with the feminist disses, as early as age 8.
All queens love Barbara. Even Gregory secretly loves Barbara--I swear.
Doug, my famous former boyfriend, lived by Barbara. His devotion to her made him famous--I swear.
You are a girl after my own heart. I love music from the mid-60s (British invasion) through the 70s. I can get my fix of these on Sirius Radio. Yay!
You're playing my songs!! I answered most of those trivia questions correctly, too. If it's Simon and Garfunkle, I know it. I think that music runs in my blood. Early Joni Mitchell helped form my brain. This is comfort music like grilled cheese and tomato soup is comfort food.
But if I'm really upset, I need some Brandenburg Concertos or Vivaldi, maybe some Handel.
