I Passed my National Board Exam!

Yay! College degree? Check. National Registration? Check. No. More. Studying.

The Coding test for a job possibility has been rescheduled by the facility so I have unexpected freedom tomorrow.

You know what I'm going to do? Once the kids are off to school, I'm going to take a nice long early morning walk, with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in my iPod. Then I'm going to start my first quilt since late 2005. It's going to be a throw size and it will be in some really cute retro Halloween fabric that I've been staring longingly at for 2 1/2 years.

A Mental Picture

As I am waiting to hear from the hospital where I want to work, I am doing visualizations of my life with this job, because I want it so much. This is a magickal exercise.

I picture myself sharing an office with Lana, who currently works at this hospital. We went to college together and were actually CPR and Heimlich maneuver partners. It was pretty funny because she is almost 6 feet tall in her bare feet, and I am not quite 5'. The office is the size of a hospital inpatient room, and I will take the desk closest to the air conditioning unit, because my body temp ranges from "just-on-the-verge-of-sweatin'" to "sweatin'" and Lana's is "I-don't-need-a-jacket-yet" to "I-need-my-jacket".

I will hang pictures of my family on the wall beside my desk. In fact, I have already printed them out; they are merely waiting for their place on my office wall. I will have my own office supplies, including a rubber "fingertip" that I use to flip through medical charts quickly and efficiently, without licking my finger. Let's face it, licking one's finger in a hospital can be risky business. I will have my own email address through the hospital. I will frame my diploma, and put it on the shelf by my desk.

I will drink water all day, eat a sensible lunch and lose this 10 pounds I have gained due to school stress. I will get emails from the cancer registry of Alabama(as I will be the go-to gal for this hospital) telling me which patient charts they need abstracted. I will code @ 100 ER patient charts per day. I will get a mental picture of each cancer and ER patient, even if it is only one of my own imagining, in order to do the best job I can to input their data.

I will wear scrubs some days and "business professional" clothes some days. I will continue to cook a yummy breakfast for my children every day , which, for my children means something and bacon, pack their snacks and take them and the neighbors kids to school every morning. When they get off the bus in the afternoon, they will stay with my neighbor until I get home, on days when Chris is at his job an hour away from Nestlewood.

All will be well. So mote it be.

So mote it be.

One Week From Today!

I had 4 exams yesterday, and four assignments due today. Then I am done until next Tuesday, when I have to present my Clinical packet and Power Point. Then I will be an official college graduate, with R.H.I.T. after my name.

For those of you wondering, here is the latest job hopes and dreams update: The lady whom I hope to replace has been offered the job at MegaHospital. She has a magic number in her head for salary and she is waiting on Human Resources at MegaHospital to call her. If she is offered said magic number, she will take the job and I will get the one I want! So, I am desperately hoping she gets her magic number.

FWIW, I have a magic number too, but I will take any job offered whether I get that pay or not. Until I have experience, I am a beggar, and we all know what beggars can't be...

Oasis

Nestlewood has been an oasis this weekend. I worked 40 hours at the hospital last week (free labor, as I was doing a clinical rotation) and did homework before and after work. Chris was home 3 days and cooked breakfast and supper, bought groceries, did laundry, cleaned the kitchen...I totally had a wife! He went out of town Friday night, though, and I have been on my own with, count them, SEVEN, children!

But you know what? It was great. They are big kids, four 8 year olds and three 10 year olds, so it isn't as though I was changing diapers or anything. I could throw some pallets out in the living room floor, show them where the snacks and drinks are and then I could read or sew, make candles or watch "Medium" (which is my current obsession). I didn't have all seven of them at once. 5 at a time was my max, 4 at a time my minimum, and a couple just dropped in here and there.

Normally, I don't enjoy country music, but this song is perfect for me and the oasis of this weekend. Nestlewood has been my Mayberry. Sweet Bruhver, if you click on the link, I can promise you that your ears will bleed and you will claw the walls, as it is such a breeder song. But you will enjoy the eye candy of the men who make up Rascal Flatts.

25 Days

I won't be around much the next few weeks. My clinicals have started and I will graduate in 25 days. I still have 4 more exams and 4 more projects to turn in, but I am almost there!

A sick shild, school and a harp gig

Huck has caught another bug. His temp is about 102 today and, he says, "the cords that hold in my eyes are twisted up. I need to put soft pillows on them." Bless his heart. The flu is going around his school and from all the reports, these are the first symptoms of this strain. He hadn't been sick from age 2 to 7, but I suddenly can't keep him well!

So, I have an on campus clinical lab day that I am missing today, because a sick boy wants his mom. Fortunately, I earned some brownie points last semester with my teacher by volunteering to put in a week with the cancer registry of Alabama, so my grade will be fine.

I got a call from a local big wig asking me to do a performance on the 25th. Very short notice, but still, it's always nice to be called for something like this. I'm to do two songs with my harp and one just my voice with piano accompaniment, and 2 as a duet with a guy I've never met, with songs I don't know. I must squeeze in some practice time.

Sporadic Sleep

I don't sleep. I doze. On a good night, I am physically out of bed 3 times. Last night I was physically out of bed 10 times in 8 hours.

Lina is sick. Even if she is resting peacefully, my mommy radar goes off and demands that I make sure she is okay. She has asthma, so often has a rough time of things.

I remember when Thumbelina was first born. She had to stay in the hospital for three weeks due to prematurity. I was determined to breast feed, so I had an intimate relationship with a breast pump. I set the alarm to get up and pump so my milk supply would be full and ready for her when she came home from the hospital. I remember that I literally cried in the middle of the night because I knew I would never again sleep like I did before I became a mother.

By the time Huck was born, I was so used to not sleeping that it was par for the course. I just assumed that I wouldn't sleep. I went to bed, curled up around my snuggle pillow, knowing that I would get up the first time in about an hour and a half.

It's been over 10 years, and it still isn't any better. I still curl around my snuggle pillow and assume that I will be up in about an hour and a half, and I'm usually correct. If it isn't somebody being sick, it's somebody having a bad dream or somebody just waking up and wanting their mama and crawling in the bed with me and squirming or playing with my hair. Or two somebodies doing that. Maybe my dog needs to go pee. But "the mama" is the one who hears everything and takes care of everything during the night.

Of course it is exhausting. But it is also a blessing. The instant my children awaken, they think of me and want to find me and be where I am.
